    Hi All,

What are the guidelines for selecting the correct skimmer for your setup ? What must be taken into account and what size skimmer do you need for your tank ? Is it based on volume? Is it only volume of DT or sump as well ?

normally 1.5 to 2 times double the display volume. But that also depends on your stock levels. Lots of fish, bigger skimmer.

the skimmer would be rated for certain tank size. look up the skimmer model on the internet and check its rating. like Riaan says 1.5 to 2 times the total volume of your system is recommended. research what pump is the skimmer using and what rating is it. whether is using pinwheel or not. pinwheel pumps are good because they are capable of drawing more air and also breaking up the air bubbles very well making them as small as possible which results in better skimming

ok, so on a 360L tank I should be looking at about a 700l/h skimmer ... what would be considered lots of fish in 360L (1200x600x500) - let's use clowns as the currency ... 5, 10, 15 ?

Why should one purchase a skimmer rated twice the recommended rated tank volume? Is it because some brands overate the capacity of their skimmers?

This is most certainly not the case with top brand skimmers.

    true.

And with the latest designs, it is different, cone shaped, bubble plates, different impellers. Now also DC pumps to save on power.

Then next option is internal VS external.

Excuse my ignorance ... but does that translate to "in-sump" or not ?

Going by tank rating can be confusing as most sites will give a different rating for the same skimmer. Look at the pump size and it's water and air draw. That should give you a better comparison between skimmers.

    internal - in sump
external - outside sump, connected via plumbing
