Sea Hair - Are the purple spray toxic? My sea hair got stuck behind a blower and when I released him he sprayed purple ink. I took him out asap and put in another tank. Are my fish safe or not?

    Hi Deon,
From my knowledge of putting these buggers in a tank is that they are hard workers but when something happens like in your case the liquid that oozes out is pretty highly toxic! I've had one die in my tank and 2 days later all my goldies where dead! and this is in a 1600L system. it will dissipate into your sump but I would highly suggest a large water change?
    How big is your tank?

This is "hare" raising, don't want one of those in my tank.

Last time down at Margate, I found a big one, took it out, in a bucket to show to my dad. He took it out in his hand and it released the purple dye. "what now, what now" hand outstretched and not knowing what to do.
 myself silly at his reaction.
Made his hand purple for a couple of days. Eventually told him to just put it back in the bucket.
Released it a few minutes later.

i have a sea hare in my tank and it is really cool. i sold my first one when i closed down my last tank. then had a bit of hair algae andi got a new sea hare and he cleaned it up in days. i can take him out of my tank for my daughter to stroke. just be gentle with them. i even tilted mine face down and gave him gentle squeezes to get the air he sucked in out. when no more bbbles came out i released him in tank and all is well. they have a rib cage/skeleton and will squirt muck if you squeeze enough to bruise them. run carbon after doing large water change

Thanks guys, had a hectic few days at work, only got back home this morning after his squirting. All seems fine but think I’ll rather still do a water change.
