I took my algae scrubber out to clean it and when I put it back, small piece of grit had somehow got onto the felt side and lightly scratched the outside of my tank.

I will be checking with my local hardware store tomorrow but wanted to know if anyone here has had success buffing out medium to light scratches on their glass aquariums

Medium to light scratches can be buffed out to an extent. When a scratch happens there will be micro ridges on either side of the scratch. When you buff the scratch these are what are removed but the scratch itself will remain, although to a lesser extent of being visible. There is a product that supposedly completely removes scratches called jewelers rouge, but I can't find the stuff anywhere other than overseas. If you ever do find it please let me know coz i have been searching for a while now.

If the scratch is on an acrylic tank however the process is quite different with sanding being involved starting with a grit sandpaper that is slowly changed until you are eventually wet sanding and finally polishing.

Thanks, will phone around today to see if I can get hold of either of them. I release that I may not be able to completely remove the scratch but the less visible I can make it the better

Any idea where in Cape Town to buy Cerium Oxide. My googling has only come up with 5kg quantities at suppliers.

Found on Ebay - R140 for 25g (shipping included). Will probably take a few weeks to get here. If someone has a lead on a local supplier it will be much appreciated.

25g isn't gonna get you very far. I use a lot in my business, though I'm actually running pretty low myself. Try the US lapidary shops, we get seriously ripped off locally. Pay around R150-200 for 250g.

Thanks - can you point me to where to find a US lapidary shop that ships internationally? I googled for a while but gave up.

I'm busy replacing my 1200l tank with a newish tank and the old one is moving to the garage to become a fish only / predator expirement. Has picked up some scratches over the years though and want to try and remove some of them before I fill it up.

Found a local supplier that sells 1kg of Cerium Oxide for R370+VAT plus shipping of around R45.
Will try to order and hopefully I will have some spare if someone in Cape Town needs some later...

    Got my 1kg yesterday.

    Regipol/Cerium Oxide

    Price for 1kg = R370+VAT + R45 shipping (door to door)

Will do. But will take a while - lots of projects on hand.

New 1200l tank to setup (not scratched ...). Then my old 1400l tank which just moved to the garage will become the pet project - including scratch removal!
(If anyone has cheap dead rock available let me know!)

I will try to take pictures before and after the scratch removal exercise. I suspect some of the scratches may be too deep, but I will try it on all the scratches and try to give feedback in this forum as to how effective or not the effort was.

PS Does anyone know whether Cerium Oxide will work the same on starfire glass as with normal glass?
