Got a pic of where your powerheads are in the tank?, more flow will only equal more sand i think.

Put controller on powerheads to swop currents and direction. this will pause movement and allow sand to drop out of water column.

Ps if it is fine dust and not grains of sand. put filter wool in overflow or similar area to filter this dust out

If he is new to the tank then its normal. As he sifts through the sand, the detritus will get into the water column. Use filterwool as mandarinman suggested or put a filtersock on the overflow in the sump. Clean this sock daily or even more if the tank is very dirty. It could take a couple of weeks before the water will be sparkly clean. Just think about it this way, all the crap you see in the water column would have caused nutrient issues if left alone. So he is doing you a huge favour at the moment. Another thing that you will also have to do is blow the rocks off every few days. Reason being that the detritus will settle on the rocks and could cause cyano later on. The longer the detritus stays in suspension the more will get caught in the overflow.

ok so now your next step is to remove and replace him;)... else you will have to live with non stop sand storms for years to come:whistling:... get the diamondback goby, its the only well behaved sandsifter:p... trust me.. if you dont wana take tank apart, get yourself a pipe thick enough for him to fit in and syphon him out
