So as the title suggests, is it fine to run your skimmer while you cycle your tank?

I can't seem to find a clear cut answer, some say yes while others say it will prolong the cycle.

I decided to start a nano tank (38 liters) since I can't start my 500l yet due to house renovations.

In my 38l I have a piece of dead rock and red sea live reef base (ocean white) sand and also put in one cap full of seachem stability.

I put in the water today, the water salinity is at 1.027-8 (shop premix water), so if I'm correct its a bit high and should be around 1.025?

I want to try do this right from the start, if i'm going to make mistakes, I want to do it in the 38l and not the 500l.

id deffinatley run the skimmer while cycling for 2 reasons,

    1) to assist in removing DOC's
    2) to allow it to break in before the actual load starts.

as for salanity id suggest anywhere between 1022 - 1025 ;)

Considering you are using premixed water, what does the shop say is the specifig gravity/salinity of their premix?
What are you measuring salinity with?

Well the water was in two 25l containers and the guy at dorry told me that the water in the one container had a higher gravity/salinity than the other (around 1030-1032 - can't remember which one it was) and the other container had a lower reading (can't remember what though), so what I did was when putting the water in my tank I used water from both containers to try bring down the SG (to where it is now).

    I use a refractometer.
