    Hi guys. I need some advice with regards to running GFO.

    These are my parameters:
    nitrates= <2
    phosphates= 0.05
    Alkalinity= 9.8
    Calcium= 450
    Magnesium=1400

    Problem: my corals are not thriving like they were. Some seem to be losing tissue and others colour ever since I started running GFO.

    Should I stop the GFO now since my phosphates are low and start it again if they rise
    OR
    Should I continue running GFO and maybe start over feeding?

    I dose vodka too...

    what gfo are you using? maybe just stop the vodka dosing but if you were to do that i guess it would be best slowly reduce the amount of vodka used.

    Nitrate of 2 and PO of 0,05 fine for SPS and probably fine for LPS. How fast did you bring it down and what was it on before you added the GFO?

    I use that ATI GFO- Its quiet potent. Rapid reduction shocks your corals. Best bring it down slowly.

    GFO, Something I would never use, does not just only remove phosphates and silicates, it too removes iron(FE) Boron and many other trace elements, I cant remember where I read, but somewhere it was advised not to use GFO.

    if it is just phosphate there are other better means, I'd prefer lanthanum chloride, just my choice.

    My phosphates were sitting on 0.5 about 2 months back before I started running the GFO

    I use GFO and my corals have been thriving. My levels are low though, not measurable with salifert test kit. Heard it shouldn’t be that low.

    I’m of using it on a “on” -“off” basis and just keeping tabs on phosphate

    Nitrate: 0.2
    Calcium: 400
    Alkalinity: 8.3
    Sg: 1.024
    PH: 8.0

    I'm not saying you must NOT use it, but note GFO also removes light metals when should remain in your water column.
    if it works for you, then it works.

    Thank you for all the information and links - I have been struggling to get Po3 below 0.3....only to be educated on the red field ratio - this pushes me to increase No2/No3 with Florish Nitrogen....whilst this is helping, it is not yet reduced the Po3 to where it should be.

    I will look to add some GFO to my system, slowly....and see if this helps with that last push...

    Good thread and most helpful indeed - thanks!
