Started running my 550 yesterday, needs abit more water. The pics show the water to be VERY cloudy (just started running it), woke up this morning and all way crystal clear...now I have only 3kg of live rock and found a blue legged hermit crab in aswell. Going to run this untill Jan (im away most of December)

    Wait for pics

Good start I also have one of these tanks they are really nice.
I like what you have done with the hob skimmer. What skimmer is it?
Am I wrong in thinking you are not running the filtration system as the water level is too low.
    If not Why not?
I would advise a few more kilos of live rock as this really helps with filtration, it might seem a bit pricey but it hard to add later, trust me you won't regret it.;)

That's a great starter tank. I started off with the Boyu...lovely tank although I changed the skimmer and got a few sponges to absorb nitrates and phosphates. Once my tank was up and running I had to do water changes twice a week to maintain it. It's a pity that i lost all thos pictures.

I wish you all the best

    Thanx for the feedback guys,

To answer the questions I simply bought too little water, I went back to my LPS yestaday and got the rest so now it is filled up.

I am running a Prizm Red Sea Hang on Protein Skimmer. The back of the tank is cut as you can see.

I am planning on adding alot more live rock, just waiting for payday...that fiji is expensive wow!

In the 4 Chambers in the back I have the following:

Chamber 1 (Frot view left): Standard Filter
Chamber 2: Bioballs (not much) and my skimmer
    Chamber 3: Heater
    Chamber 4: Sponges

    What you guys think?

Just my opinion here, but I would take the balls out as they convert ammonia into nitrites and then nitrates but they dont get rid of the nitrates and can even become a problem causing excess nitrates. If you have a lot of live rock and after your tank has been running for a while you shouldnt have a problem with ammonia. I also put some filter floss above the sponge which I change twice a week this helps to keep the water and the back compartment clean and in my opinion is easier then always taking the sponge out to rinse. If you do go for the floss you just need to remember to change it regularly as it can also be the cause of nitrates.

    Hi

Also think about using something like Purigen, it works out relatively cheap and have a big impact on clarity and final nitrate levels.

    Thanx Guys,

Ill remove those balls as soon as I get home from work. I just thought it might add to the system as I run the live rock for a while now. Trying to get a habitat as natural as possible. Len, I followed your link and your tank looks stunning, where can I get Purigen and how much are we talking with regards to costs? at my LFS i presume?

Right now my tank is looking very clear and clean, I havnt tested my water yet or even bought test kits cause I plan on running this live rock for a while (Away often in December), will get the test kits soon.

Most LFS stock it I think it costs about R150 and it can be regenerated.

Thanks, hope it's going to stay that way through summer.

Most LFS stocks Purigen, I also use something called Chemi-pure, it does "similar" things so both is probable overkill.

One small bag should be enough for your tank, depending on the water quality it should last between 4 and 6 months and cost around R150. It can be regenerated with bleach, but I am to scared to do it.

Note, if you buy a bigger container it comes without a bag, pls make sure you use a good/correct bag for it. The Bag is the best. Stockings don't last and if this stuff gets out it is nearly imposible to collect it.

R150 bux every 6months sound like a fair deal to me.

No way in hell will i do anything with bleach...KISS(keep it simple stupid) thats my theory.

Thanx for the help man, will def use that Purigen. Appreciated:thumbup:

why, Until you have enough live rock, why not use every bit that can help with filtration? Over time, you can later remove them, when you have enough live rock.

They can stay until Jan. And that is not the long run.

The problem is that they do not complete the nitrogen cycle. But at least they do one part f it.
Also small live rock pieces do not complete the cycle either. Needs areas without O2 to be able to convert the NO3.

Hi there. I was at Aquatic Vision in Brackenfell this morning and saw live rock at R175 per kg. Not sure if it was Fiji though. They are very trustworthy. Great shop if you have not been there yet.
