The only thing I dislike about my 250 is the skimmer. It is ineffective, noisy, and however I set it, does not do the job it is there for.

Doing a bit of research, I have found the Nano Reef Systems RSM250 Nano Skimmer and all reviews seem favourable. Has anyone with a 250 used an alternate skimmer and give me some advice please?

@Anita would this skimmer fit into the 250 chamber and more importantly is it capable of handling the load? If it is please could you PM me a price.

    Thank you

Hi Deacon, took me a while to get mine fine tuned... I find the valve cap that varies the air so so sensitive and that's where my issue is.. Funnily enough my 130D is more noisier than the 250 so no complaints there. I am happy with the skimmer for now. Just wondering how much better the tunze is.

What is the size of the skinmer compartment?
I'll see what there is for you.

    Noisy in what way?

    What kind of noise?

Making the skimmer quiet was an easy job.

The four main things I did to "fix" my skimmer was get an ATO to keep the water level consistent in the skimmer chamber, change my small polishing filter regularly to avoid blocking, overflowing and then increasing the water level which screws the skimmer.
Disconnect the air tubing from the supplied valve, route it through a drill hole in the back and connect and air valve of your choice. Quick and small adjustments possible with out digging in the back.
Lastly move your overflow almost to the top, about a 1cm from the top.
After you have tuned it in it shows of work like a dream.

On the air intake place a valve on the pipe and then an air filter on the end of the pipe. That will remove the sucking noise from the pipe.

On the skimmer motor check the plastic bushes are not worn and that the impeller shaft does not have any cracks on it. That will allow the impeller to spin freely.

Cut a piece of rubber sponge and wrap it around the outside of the whole skimmer unit to stop the plastic casing from vibrating against the glass compartment.

So after playing around with the standard skimmer and not getting close to the performance shown on Bendors photo, I have replaced with a Tunze 9004 this morning. Initial impressions are its tiny compared to the RS unit. Will give some feedback after a few days.

Another question - there is plenty unused space now that the Tunze is in, should I leave this empty or are there any suggestions on what to use in this compartment.

Let the skimmer set first for a week, so that you can see the impact of the new skimmer. Then you can fiddle some more.

The skimmer has been in for roughly 24 hours. @RiaanP I have had to adjust the settings before a week, as for some or other reason the skim level rose overnight and I woke to a furiously bubbling skimmer and an overflowing cup. This after a nice steady mid chamber skim throughout the day. Not too sure why the skim would have adjusted so radically without any manual intervention. The skimmer is busy, but one concern that I have is that it is skimming "clean" with lovely white bubbles and no gunk so to speak of. Lets see how the next 24 hours go.
