    Hi Guys,
I've been thinking of upgrading my red sea max 130D lighting for a while,
After a vast research, i've been left with 2options,
Bridgelux : Aquarium 36 LEDs Dimmable DIY LED kit with optics

Cree: Red Sea Max 130D Dimmable Retrofit Kit - Rapid LED

I'm very confused as i'm not sure how much LEDs i'll need,
I want to be able to cater for all sorts of popular corals, SPS, LPS, clams

The first option which is a much cheaper option has 36LEDs, 3watt each,
And has optics, doesn't come with heatsink, but its not more than $50 for heatsink

Second one, Well is CREE! quite costly in compare to the first option, and less LEDs,
    But better products,

    Both are Dimmable,
I'm not about the color ration that i need.
    The Cree one comes with:

Which the ratio can be changed

The bridgelux comes with 36 :

    • White 10000K
    • Royal Blue 452-455nm
    Really appreciate any advise

Well im no expert but to give u a idea..Im busy with a 1.2m that im gonna run leds...If i use bridgelux leds i would need about 110 leds to keep sps aswell...If i use Cree i need about 80....Cree leds are much stronger...The nice thing with the rapidled option is u dont need to mod ur hood...But i recon 27 cree leds will be more than enough for a Rsm 130...The pros can correct me if i am wrong...

My advise is based on personal experience.
According to the specification of light output, you will need 3 bridgelux to every 1 cree. That being said, 3 x more LED's means 3 x more heat and we dont want to run into heating issues.

The aquastyle online kit (bridgelux) - Not sure the heatsink avalible with this kit will fit into a RSM 130 18cm x 40cm unless your looking at something else?
I am not to sure about the driver quality either.

The Rapid kit - you will need to order either, 2 the pots filter extra, or a controller (if your using the P series driver), You will have to also email Mike from rapid as heatsink shipping to SA costs Extra.

Personally i would go with the Rapid LED Kit. It is designed to fit into the RSM 130, lighting area (Minimum modification if any)

    Thanks for the advise,
THe aquastyle kit doesn't come with heatsink but you can order it from them separately, which doesn't cost that much, I think the price including the heatsink and the shipping gonna end up $180
Here is the picture of the driver they offering:

This one is what RapidLed offering is :Meanwell ELN-60-48P or Meanwell ELN-60-48D

And the price including shipping for this kit is about $300

What is the Pots filter you mentioned? And what is its necessity?

And what color ratio is required for my tank?
Is 14royal blue and 13 white enough?
Don't i need violet UV leds as well?

    Thanks for advise!

The P series driver require a PWM input to work and all (ie a controller). The D series only require an analoge input. ie a POTS.

I understand you wan to save money, I have read alot on another forum about the aquastle drivers not lasting long. and this was a concern for me.

You could go non dimable, but you will be sorry in the future that you didnt get the Dimmable ones.

Everything im telling you is based on what i have done already. They best advice i can give you is the following,
Research a little more about what is avalible and make up your mind as to what it is that you want. You have to build it and live with it afterall. and you dont want to be dissapointed.

Thanks for the information, it was very helpful,
I'm quite sure that i'll go with Cree, and the typhon controller,
I'm a bit hesitating because i heard there are new generation of LEDs coming soon,
Not sure how soon, but yeah i have to upgrade the lights ASAP.

    Hi There,

I've got a Boyu TL 550 which I am going to upgrade to LED Strips over the next couple of days.

    2 x White Strips - 14 000K @ 300mm each
    2 x Blue Strips - 20 000K @ 300mm each
1 Driver for the White Strips
1 Driver for the Blue Strips

I am gonna leave in the PL-24 Compact Lights at 10 000K and just the strips to this.

Upgrade is gonna cost me in the region of R 1 000

    Regards

    At the moment I have

    2x True Percs
    1 x Purple Firefish

    1x RBTA
    Zoas
Hairy green Mushrooms / Blue Mushrooms
    Frogspawn & Hammer

Main reasons for Changing are the cost of Bulbs for the Red Sea Max every 6-9 months Changing them,

This cost me $140 USD that was for the 24 Kit + extra 8 Leds and shipping to NZ

You can't deny the power of the cree leds but there prices are ridiculous.
I also used the bridgelux leds and am very impresed with there output.
I do agree about the drivers as they tend to run a bit hot and one of mine even failed, but I think the cause of this also has to do with putting to many leds on them.
If its rated for 12 to 20 leds I wouldn't put more than 16 leds on it.

I recently started a new project for a small nano and have ordered 10 3w leds, a driver, a heatsink and lenses for R400.
