Wetty - no - not at all. They are purely supplemental, and are mostly used for moonlights or perhaps sump lights.... Not to replace T5's or metal halides, nor Power compacts (PC). Are you actually referring to PC a.k.a Power Compact flourescents? Or CF? Compact fluorescents?

Cool! No probs man.... Yes - Power Compacts are ok for nano tanks. But not for anything else..... You best value for money would be to go for T5's.... I have just replaced some of my T5 globes. I bought 54 watt T5 Sylvania AquaStar and CoralStar (2 of each) and it cost me a total of R316 at "The Lamphouse". You are lucky - you too have a "Lamphouse" somewhere close to you. Just google "The Lamphouse".... you will find their Jhb address.....

The 2 technologies of lamps you get are:
    - Normal Output (NO) - mostly the "Standard" T8 flourescents you get
    - High Output (HO) - T5's
    - Very High Output - specialized T12 globes (mostly manufactured by Philips)
    - Metal Halides (closest to the strength of sunlight we can use in our aquariums)
