Ricordia Question

I have the following coral and it growing pretty quickly, I would love to propagate as it is a nice lumo orange color and would sell well

Any suggestions ?

I've read that you can cut it into four pieces, like one would frag a shroom

Well if we can work out a good method, hopefully all will be able to have :)

This particular boy grows relatively quickly, it was a frag from Matt originally
 
mmm also wanting some looking to specialise in thses little buggers please keep me in mind when there are available...
 
The way I go about fragging them is called the bowl method.The problem with ricordia is when you cut them they produce a lot of slime which makes them almost impossible to attach using the usual methods such as superglue.Take a glass bowl and sprinkle some crushed coral on the bottom.Now cut up the coral and spread the frags out in the bowl.After 2 to 3 weeks the frags would have attached themselves to the substrate.These pieces can then be glued onto nice pieces of rock.Works for me.

Zoo, thanks for the info.

When cutting do you cut like a pizza ? And in into how many pieces would you suggest ?

Like most things in life ,bigger is better.Small pieces will work but take a long time to develop into something worthwhile.I have even seen thread on Reef Central where the guys where chopping them up in a blender.
 
placing the smaller parts(once propagated) into a dish of crushed coral will make their foot stick to many different pieces of crushed coral/rocks. when he is large enough, cut bits of the foot that are attached to the various pieces that the foot has taken hold on and separate them. continue this process and you'll end up with plenty to sell!
doing it this way makes it easier to cut the foot and separate it.
i've bin told that so long as there is a piece of their foot persent it will grow. like a shroom :thumbup:
 
Warr: when fragging (cutting) use a sharp blade. Try include a piece of the mouth in every frag (this will allow them to recover much quicker. However saying that I have made a few accidental frags before and even tiny pieces of mantle recovered to form full corals :thumbup:

What part of the coral is attached to the rock ? Just the mouth area ?
