Return water to the tank is pushed through the sand from underneath. This creates biological filtration , and keeps particles suspended in the water .

The system I used to run in my Malawi cichlid tank worked very good on there tanks but in a marine tank never heard of that one.

Yes I am running a reverse undergravel filter but it has only been in operation for 44 years so I am not sure how long it will last. I think at 45 years old it will stat to have a problem.

I think it would work great , but I do not think you get the undergravel plates anymore. There used to be nice ones that you could expand to any size, and had a large pipe to feed the water down. You could even put a return pipe either side.
