    Hi all

I'm starting up a 200L system which is about a 1m across. I have two return pumps that I could use - one is rated at 1000lph and the other at 1750lph (both Hailea). If I have approximately 1.5m to 2m from the return pump to the tank which would be better to use?

    thanks!

    B.

It all depends on what you want to keep in the sump. If you have a DSB it would be better if there is lower water flow but if you only have live rock or cheato, it's better for higher flow. I would go for the 1750 because with the height of 1.5 - 2 metres it's better because it would only do about 1000 litres/hour. It also depends on the size of the sump, if it's a very small sump( 50 Litres) it would be better to use the smaller pump.

Thanks, Annoying! It is a very small sump. So the smaller pump will have to do.

Whats the size of the sump, do you have a skimmer in it, are you going to have a DSB or just cheato?

The sump is probably about 40 - 50 litres. It will have a DSB and a skimmer in it.

It's very small for a DSB, to have a functioning DSB the total area of the DSB must be at least 40% of the main tank area. Thinking that the skimmer is most likely going to take up half of the sump, the DSB would almost not help. In a small chamber I would rather have macro algae like chaeto as they are great in filtering out impurities and if the get to big for the chamber you can just trim it back.
