Hi leslie, Im in the process of setting up my first system. From sump to inlet is approx 1.4 meters. tank is 1.4 x 600 x 600. I'm thinking of having only one return to the tank but if needed can drill for 2. ( haven't drilled anything yet as in looking for equipment on a budget to suit the tank). Sup will be 1.2 x 450 x 450 split in 4 compartments.
What other info do you require?
Sorry this is my first tank and I'm learning as I go....mite be a bad thing lol

No stress that's what we here for.

Your system without sump equates to approx 500lt without displacement.

I would recomend a aquamedic ocean runner 3500 or equivalent.

You could look at a dc pump (they are controllable) so you can increase or decrease flow to suit the tank and fine tune to eliminate noise.

The more info you csn give us the better try include pics etc.

As for drilling I'd go with 1 x 50mm as an outlet on an overflow box.

My first choice is a controllable pump for the reasons you mentioned, guess the mentioned pump is not controlable.
As for my outlet I'm heading towards 3 outlets as I'm construction a diy pvc coast to coast. 3 x smaller holes leading into 1 x 50mm into first compartment in the sump.
I'm still not decided on the overflow As I just finished construction of my tank last night so I have options....just like the low profile of the pvc coast to coast system

I would rather recomend a free flowing overflow rather than through holes then to the main outlet it will allow a better skimming action. But I may not be understanding the design you are suggesting

Hope so, now just to play around with the pipes to see what hole size and fittings are available to construct such an overflow. The pic of the overflow is one I downloaded

It will all come together. Enjoy the build process while it lasts after its set up you crave a project over maintenance.
