    Hi
Is it possible to replace 150W MH lamps in a light fitting with 250W MH lamps?
Does it depend on the ballasts or something or should it not be a problem?

NO. You need a bigger ballast and the bulbs are bigger from 150 to 250Watt

Lemar - ditto to what Tony has said. The Metal halide control gear needs to be replaced. And not only that - the fitting for most 150 watt units are double-ended. Where most 250watt globes are single ended (only connects on one side, screw in type globe)....

Do you actually get 250watt DE globes Mekaeel? I have never seen them in the trade....... Even "The Lamphouse" suggested going SE for 250watt's and higher...

    250w Metal Halide D E

Sunburst initially got his 250W MH DE from Cape Town via DragonReef.
I think he used them BEFORE his new unit...since 2006

They were sourced by AQuality who imports, and stocks
    70W
    150W
    250W
    all DE format.

NOW , we have an idea;)

Liaquat, is the 150W DE and the 250W DE the same length?

    Hard luck...

    Nope!
Just a tad bit larger diameter and length.

Different end-fittings too, as a result of terminal structure.

But I HAVE, placed 250W DE into 150W DE fixtures, replaced ends, ballasts (IceCap, electronic). Reflector/housing is almost right, I just widened aperture for newer. larger end-fittings.

    It's a "STEALTH MOD" upgrade.

NOBODY but you, will realise the differences, with coral growth and colour explicably enhanced.

I JUST grabbed a few lamps to compare,....
    <30mm difference in Total Length.

    Thanks for the info!
What would you say is more effcient in terms of coral growth (mainly SPS) SE or DE?

I spoke to the guy how builds the reefinmates units and he recomended that I go with the single ended lamps.Turns out he no longer uses the double ended lamps in his units. The single ended lamps are more freely available with more choices as regards make and colour.
