    Hi All,

I have a large chamber filled with ceramic rings (its the first chamber) - been reading some reviews on them & it seems most people recon to get rid of them (slowly each week).

What would you then replace them with in that chamber? (sure they also work to avoid micro-bubbles)

    Any ideas / suggestions?

    Cheers

very good idea t oremove them, all they do in marine systems is trap detritus and make nitrates.
what do you have in the other chambers?

do you still have filter floss in that chamber?

how about running some carbon in that chamber?
Or leave it empty so that you can make the first chamber bigger for when you upgrade your skimmer.

    Do you have a skimmer?
That is normally in first chamber.

    Mechanical - Biological - Chemical
That is the preferred filtration methods.

Do not remove the rings all in one day. will upset your tank balance. Do it over 4 weeks or even more.

Micro bubbles, not a problem, unless they are able to travel all the way across the DSB into last chamber and your return pump actually sucks them in. Can also keep water level in last chamber 1cm to max 3cm lower than water level above DSB to prevent the last divider from creating more bubbles. Do you have an auto top-up?

no need to, depends also on size of DSB.
    Maybe post a pic.

else, if first chamber is big, and you do want to put something else in there, check out the smaller white bioballs that do drift / float. Should not sink. Easy to clean, just stirr once a week, and they do the same job then as your ceramic rings. But only a double layer. Will also help trap the microbubbles. And it should not trap detritus. That is if you really want to use that space.

    Else, just have it empty.
