even after calibrating it's totally wrong, only realised something was wrong when I checked it against my trusty R80 hydrometer:whistling:.

What could cause this and how can I fix it?

Also make sure that the temp of the RO used for calibration is the same as the tank water to be tested.

nope, haven't dropped it and temp was the same as the tanks water, very strange. Are they fixable?

I had this discussion with Idol marine a week ago and they have a temperature vs salinity table. We saw that unless the temperature is like 15deg different , that it should not make a noticeable difference in the salinity reading. We also found that you cannot calibrate with plain RO. We used calibration fluid set to 1.023 to calibrate the refractometer. If you test the RO after that, you will notice a reading of 1.003 or similar. Best is to get some calibration fluid and calibrate the refracometer before every test.

Are u not supposed to use distilled water, like that what the chemist uses when mixing up antibiotics?

    Yeah...Where can we get it?

I Just calibrated my refractometer using my Tropic Marin Hydrometer reading.......

But i think the calibration fluid will do a better job...

Idol Marine gave me the Profilux calibration fluid. R106 for 50ml, but you only use 3 drops at a time. It will last forever.

I recon distilled is fine as long as it isn't very old.

I only use distilled. Strange that it went out so much was it not left in the sun or exposed to heat and I take it the reading glass isnt scratched or dirty with a salt film on it?? (dum question but I've see a lfs use one with a whole lotta crap on the glass.....

took it to the LFS to check, after calibration got a reading of 1.030 form the display tank. Actual salinity was 1.024. Not sure what to do now.
