    Howdy guys

I need my C02 bottle refilled. Hopefully Idol has so I can swap it out.

I was thinking, what if they don't have. That could be a problem as I am sure this could mess with my tank a lot.

I tried a local Paintball shop and they looked at me like I was stupid. When I eventually got them to understand they did not have the right connections.

Any Paintball or other places you guys can think off in the Sunnighill, Randburg, Randpark Ridge area?

i have been investigating this aswell of late and alot of people do not have the correct fittings to couple to the stopcock on teh Co2 cylinder... im also a little concerned as East london is alot more limited in its options that your city...

i will offer feedback when i get my cylinder as im sure it will need filling when it arrives....

    Ross,

You can try any company that services & refills CO2 fire extinguishers. They use industrial CO2 (same as welding CO2), but that is still pretty pure - I have been using a fire service company here in Bloem for many years now without any problems to my livestock.

    Try paintball shops.

Not sure on purity though but I'm sure it cant be too bad.

What about Kreature.co.za in Northgate shopping centre? I would give them a bash if you in the area.

Best bet will be fire fighter shops as the guys said. Paintball shops cant refill unless its a paintball cylinder or has a fitting like that or soda stream. Afrox wont refill, unless its their cylinder.

I actually had a brass fitting made to adapt a Soda Stream bottle to my large, industrial CO2/Argon regulator, to be used as an emergency measure, so yes, it can be done (just looks very funny...)

The cheapest and easiest, though, is to use a CO2 fire extinguisher, with a proper shut-off valve fitted instead of the "pull trigger" mechanisms they are normally equipped with. In an emergency, one could even fit a regulator on to an unmodified cylinder, and just tie the trigger down with a cable tie or something similar - just turn the bottle upside down, though, as they are designed to such the liquid CO2 from the bottom of the cylinder, whilst we would prefer to use the gas from the top.

Agreed - you need to move to Bloemfontein - here people are generally not so full of shit regarding regulations, etc

There is some SANS regulation requiring a full pressure test if anything on a cylinder has been modified. The answer to this is to get the people that will refill the cylinder to do the modification in the first place, then they would do this testing after the modification, and have a record of it for future use.

For what it's worth, I have just done exactly what I have suggested here - used an unmodified fire extinguisher, with the trigger just tied down... here is a link to a thread on this: Using a fire extinguisher as a CO2 source for a calcium reactor - Marine Aquariums of South Africa
