I treated my tank to a new set of tubes this weekend. I was uhmming and ahhing during the selection process in the store, and eventually settled for a set of Reeftek tubes (the prices were very reasonable).

On the other hand, the ATI tubes were more than double the price of the Reefteks.

So - simple question: are these tubes worth double the asking price of the Reefteks?

    Thanks!

I would have gone for the ATI's instead of the reeftek's. Personal opinion.

ATI's PAR output will be much higher than that of Reeftek's.

reeftec work fine, but cant be compared to the likes of ati or giesman. They definitely worth the extra money. Not only is par much higher, they last alot longer and give you much more colour choice.

I want to see some sort of comparison based on par readings and whatnot. I am not going to defend the reefteks in order to justify the purchase, if the ATI's are better then they're better. I do however see a lot of "moar $$$ = better" rubbish, and truth be told, those kinds of shibboleths have absolutely zero impression on me.

at the end of the day you take what suits your pocket better. imho reeftek is not the best, look at replacing tubes every 6 to 8 months as they lose color and brightness. where the more expensive brands can go up to 13 maybe 14 months without replacing them (help me if im wrong here).

In my experience the reefteks (especially 10k/12k) go yellow faster than ATI. With the blues/actinics not as noticable.

I initially used reefteks for the first 4 years because of the the exact same reason, pricing. Everything lived. I am now using ATI and won't go back (considered a mix initially, ATI whiter lights and reeftek blues but decided against it [ten t5s in total]).

Cannot compare livestock as the ATIs are over my new tank and Reefteks were over the old but the overall look attained is better but also have better filtration, better skimmer, more water, less fish, etc now.

    Are you running SPS/mixed?

I also considered the fact that my tank is 90% softies with a handful of LPS.

Old tank was lps with some sps (high up), new tank is mainly sps (now also lower down), with some lps.

Also with regards to replacement of the reefteks, I replaced the whites sooner than the blues. Whites every six months, blues 12 months sometime more.

I agree with your approach regarding softies and lps (with money being the factor to consider - else we may all be running LED)
