    Hi masa

I am building my first reef tank and need some advice on the sump. I want to incorporate a DSB and a refugium. I am not sure if both is necessary but from what I read this is. The proposed sump layout:

The inlet compartment for the protein skimmer is 250mm deep, the DSB 230, the refugium / return 210.

    Any thoughts?

Woops, forgot to mention that, DT 232 litre, total system volume about 320 litre.

does the sump have to be a cube, can you make a long sump. the first sump i ever build was a cube and to be honest it didn't leave alot of space for equipment. from what i see in your drawing your return chamber is very small (aprox. 10L) and you'll have to top-up RO water everyday. also you'll only be able to fit one return pump in that chamber and nothing else, as your tank matures you'll need to add more equipment there. i can show you a sump that i build for a friend of mine that has both a refugium and a DSB if you can go the long sump way

    Unfortunately I have limited space,

At this point it fills the whole cabinet :(

If i get rid of the refugium then I will have more room for the return pump and other equipment. Is a refugium crytical?

Now I remember, the cube tank:p I will not use a DSB on this system, rather go Orca Bio Cubes, then you can make the sump smaller and have more space for Top up tank, dosers, kalkwasser ect.
