Hi all- I am a reef fish taxonomist and working on the "Barcode of Life" project where we are trying to sequence the same gene for all the world's animals- I do a lot of sequencing of reef fishes for the fish part, which is FISH-bol. We know that aquarium collectors often get very interesting and rare fish and we are always interested in getting a piece of them for a DNA sequence- the fish can stay alive, even a piece of fin the size of half a rice grain in ethanol or isopropyl is fine. If any unsual fish of yours die, put them in the freezer and we can sequence them for you and for science..

    Sounds like an interesting project.

One problem, most of this forum members are in South Africa. Getting the samples to you might be a bit of a problem.

Not really. They can be frozen and flown. Why not do a search for uShaka marine world and two oceans aquarium, I'm sure fellow scientists there would help. Sounds like a great ptoject and thesis. Keep up the good work.
