Without context the image above shows a trio of the ubiquitous Caribbean pygmy angelfish, Centropyge argi, but if we told you these fish were made in Hawaii you might call us crazy. That is until we tell you that these Hawaiian Cherub Angelfish are actually the first captive bred pygmy angelfish from Reef Culture Technologies Hawaii released in a really long time.

Blue Harbor received a handful of these captive bred Hawaiian Cherub angelfish from RCT Hawaii and in addition to having the distinction of being extremely rare captive bred angelfish, these otherwise common fish also have a unique high degree of yellow coloration on the face which is atypical for the species. Whether the strongly yellow face is an artifact of captive breeding or the parents we don’t know, but what we do know is that we are elated to see some new captive bred angelfish from RCT Hawaii and perhaps the day is nigh when we can again enjoy some captive bred resplendent angelfish, and other rare reef angelfish that are prohibitively rare and expensive from the wild.
