Hi everyone. My red sea star's one 'leg' (the tip) came off last night. Is it busy dying? Must I leave it or take it out? Will it 'poison' the tank?

    Can you post a pic?
It may be decaying due to starvation / infection / injury.

It occasionally helps to amputate the leg, above the damaged tissue, but as far as I can recall the success rate is very low on recovery if caught too late. (depending on reason)

If the tank is big enough, there shouldn't be any impact on the rest of your system, you CUC should sort it out in no time.

Maybe some more experienced people can give better advise.

My sand sifting star lost a limb as well. I just let it be, it is growing back, but very slowly.

Can't even take a photo now, just phoned my daughter who is at home, she says there is absolutely no sign of him, not a leg, nothing. How is this possible? Freaky!! I have 2 pom poms, one anemone crab, a boxing shrimp and a fire shrimp. Must I do a water change immediately? Totally stunned.

dont worry, skimmer will take it out, just judge the tank when home.

its probably hiding, or the shrimps scavenged the dead starfish if its dead

dont panic and make sudden changes

Hi! Thanks for all the advice. I do feel stupid now however, my daughter did not look properly, Lol. The star is still alive and well, doesn't seem like it's dying, looks healthy, what I can see of it. The part of the leg that broke off is also doing very well  Lol. Its actuallly moving around the tank on its own!! Freaky! Will take a pic tonight if I see it again.
