    Hi Reef E -

Can you please post pictures of this "red algae"? The only stuff that is commonly called "red algae" that I know of, that causes dismay, is cyano. And cyano is BACTERIA. Not algae.

So - two things comes to mind w.r.t cyano:
    - new tank syndrome (all new tanks get cyano, and you just have to be patient - there's nothing you can do about it except for perhaps siphon it out of your tank when doing a water change)
    - too little dissolved oxygen in the water, or too high nutrients, ie. phosphates/nitrates

Please don't and just add some crap that a LFS has suggested. Let us first try and find out WHAT exactly you have, and then also only decide what to do about it.

For example - if your phosphates/nitrates are too high, you will have to get a phosphate/nitrate remover....
If you have too little dissolved oxygen in the tank, you will have to either get an extra power-head or just point one of your existing power-heads up to the surface of the water....

welcome to cyano bacteria( it is a bacteria not an algae). Most important thing is to relax and we will work through this with you, cyano is not a problem in itself as much as it is an indicator of other thing s that might need a little correction. it is a process of elimination to get things sorted out even though it is unsightly and frustrating!. first a few questions so that we can understand what we are working with.if you can guide us through by answering these questions as best as possible we will understand your tank better and find the easiest solution that works for you. please note that there are various opinions and different things that work for different people. dont put the bio fuel in just yet if you cause too heavy an algae bloom it may cause problems( unless you have already).

ok the questions i can think of:
    how old is the tank?
    what size is the tank?
What stock have you got in the tank?
if you have stock what are you feeding it and how much?
what lighting have you got in the tank?
How long are your lights per day?
    do you do water changes?
what water do you use for water changes?
    what temp is your tank?
    what is your salinity?
do you test your water perameters?
if so for what are you testing?
if you are testing what are your latest water perameters?
what water circulation do you have in tank.

Post a picture if you can. There are a lot of different things that can be described as red algae.
