    Hi guys.

Sorry but this may sound very very stupid. Coming from a tropical setup where a 10% water change a week was mandatory, I am now looking at starting a reef tank, and wondering if there is such a thing as to much water changes. Just thinking of my nutrient levels and so on.

What is the general concensus of water changes in terms of how much and how often??

I know a lot of people do 10-15% weekly and then there are people who will do monthly like i do thats about 25% and then people who dont do at all and keep things stable with supplements/dosing

    Welcome to Marine world!
5% twice a week is advisable, but 10% a week also should do it.
It also depends on how old your system is.
Try doing the water change with the same salt mix, choose a specific salt brand and stick to it.

i think that as important as it is to do water changes its also important not to do too many in a short space of time , id go with once every 2 weeks as an optimum,

if i can offer you the most critical thing i have discovered in my years of reefkeeping its consistency, try find a rythum that works and stick to it..

i personally advocate once a month waterchanges but systems differ and so do their requirements..

    size of tank

I also heard the bigger the tank the longer you can go between changes. Not sure how accurate that is.
