Anyone using Real Reef Rock here, I am planning to use this 100% in my planned tank in the next couple months. Looks pretty good from this website information.

Why Real Reef? | Real Reef Rock

Where do I find in the Johannesburg area?

I know with live rock its great to cycle the tanks.

What would I need to kick start the bacterial growth and cycle the tank, would an uncooked prawn work . Read this on a few sites now.

I am definitely not using Damsels or other fish, sad to think that some consider this option :(

Is there any products that can you used to kick off the Nitro Cycle?

    Thanks

Cant say I've seen it here in the lfs

Carib sea dry rock most lfs sell it. I know Jungle Aquatics have alot of it. That and a bacterial additive and your good to go to make your own

theres no longer a need to seed the system with fouling foodstuffs such as prawns or food etc, a good bacteria additive is all that is needed..

what we are trying to achieve is a purer more controlled system wrt bacteria, and anything in excess in the early phases of maturity (ie too much phos) can tip the scale and start unwanted algaes growing..

as for the real reef rock i have only heard good things about it.... i am very interested to see it first hand, but its major appeal is that its hitchhicker free.. so no unwanted crabs etc.. i would however quarantine new corals if you want to keep it that way... as a crab can come in as a tiny spek on rock that is attached to coral and grow within the system.....

    That is a fallacy mate.
All needed bacteria to mutate into others and form a successful nitrogen cycling community is in fresh sea water any way.
Plus you can buy and add some good stuff as well.
I have not used live rock in over thirty years and I always start with a complete sterile environment, just sea water no older in containers then one day though.

The seeding is exactly how I achieve a diverse bacterium and robust protists numbers to handle all forms of ammonia at the start, very quickly.

So what rock do you use?

Cycling with liverock definitely has its benefits. I started my tank with dry rock and bacteria and i dont have the same diversity in terms of worms/sponges/etc as those who started theirs with good quality live rock

Usually 15 to 20 days on low salinity and raise it as the cycle goes along or if I cheat and grab a small amount of media from one of my matured systems with multitudes of protists and the usual bacteria of course, then 10 days to full but unstable maturity.

With a sterile or cheating start, establishing the varied ammonia else where in a bucket from varied dead tissue.
After some days I pour that chunky putrid water through fine mesh and then the non particle putrid water I add that to the aquarium and that’s the start of a very quick cycle.
Bought bacteria is much faster but no where near as good to take care of varied deaths and wastes straight away.

Temp, Ph,KH and flow have to be right as well.

    Just base rock completely sterilised.
Live rock has dead sponge, dead coral, dead algae and far more that all provides the varied ammonia, but also hitchhikers, not always good ones.
