Hi Folks - the name is Michael

Been thinking about starting for along time, done alot of reserach & been to see a few tanks. Also now that my brother Dean76 has made the plunge, more reason me to start.

Thinking of starting with a TL 550 (nothing bought yet - next weekend :))

Just wanted to check if this is the right forum to ask all my questions in?

    Later

    Great news :)

Been looking to buy a TL550 but most LFS dont seem to have stock, any ideas who might?

Then, once I get the tank, there seems to be a few mods to make & accessories to buy as well (test kits, heater etc) - use LR ruble in filter bag?

Any recommendations to mods & accessories to buy up front?

WRT filtration, I understand compartment one has the skimmer, compartment 2 the LR ruble (in filter bag), compartment 3 ? & compartment 4 is the pump etc?

Will start with that for now

Where do you live ? and what do you want to keep, read trew the members treads and then deside on what you want and look at what fish you want to keet, etc that will help you plan your tank

    A Beautiful place!
Welcome to MASA Michael, glad you joined. Of coarse it's the right place to ask all your questions in. We are here to help without gaining anything financial from it, unlike some petshops who just sells you the wrong stuff to make a quick buck. Be shure to check out our sponsors though, not all petshop are bad or greedy - our sponsors know their stuff ;)

Go through the for sale forum and check for secondhand tanks there, sometimes you get a bargain.

Please read through the link in my signature for some great info on how to start a marine tank.

    Keep us updated :wave2:

use 3 for a product called purigen

and for 2, instead of LR rubble, get your self 500g of zeolites, about R40, much better and keep the LR for the tank.

if you looking at a mod, there is an algae turf scrubber you can add, there are plenty nano version on the forum, or shout if you need help

Not heard of a algae turf (will search forums now) - will a LFS know what I am asking for? In which compartment would it go?

we having a meet up in dec, would be good if you can join. see the MASA Jhb Forum.

    anything else, just shout.
i would also suggest starting the tank using stability, its a very good bacteria and maintenance product

A very WARM WELCOME to MASA, MichaelB! Great to have you on-board!

Please read through the "Great article on Starting Marines" URL in my signature.... this will help you get a decent start w.r.t the knowledge you require to succesfully keep marines!

Also - please note: A nano tank requires a lot more maintenance, than a bigger tank. Also - because of the small amount of water, when the parameters go out of whack due to ie. detritus, or perhaps overfeeding, or even a dead animal - then things can go horribly wrong, VERY VERY QUICKLY....

So - with that in mind - please be extra dilligent when starting a nano tank (a Boyu TL550 is counted as a nano tank)..........

Good luck - and enjoy the journey into marines, mate! It is a really addictive and rewarding hobby!
