So I was away for 10 days and some evaporation took place. In my rush to get packed and to the airport, I forgot to leave instructions for the SO on what to do for topups etc. Sump ran dry, so she switched off all equipment :banghead:

Nett result, all micro fauna pegged. This includes tube worms, bristle worms and pods.

What would be the path going forward? Get some small pieces of LR and use it to reseed?

Also, anyone know where I can get sugar fine crushed coral in JHB?

    Shame Neil - yes. That's a problem.

I would suggest getting some Seachem Stability, MicroBacter or Prodibio bacteria.
So - this is the 1st step - your tank will most likely go through a cycle again.

2ndly - yes - get some live rock - this can be any live rock - and place this in your sump tank..... One big'ish piece should work....

Good luck. And monitor those water parameters VERY closely.

You will most likely get some diatoms and cyano bacteria again from start.

I rekon a cup of someones sand will do the trick....

The liverock may start a mini cycle in your tank again.

Thanks Jacques, LR was already cured, so there wasn't much of a cycle to start with. So all in all, not a bad thing I guess.

The only thing that seemed to have survived the single digit temps is a colonial anemone, one or 2 Aiptasia and the coraline algae

Yes thanks George. Sump didn't run that dry, just return pump not getting enough water

Looks like i'm in luck. Have seen quite a few pods zooming around and some very small tube worms growing in existing tubes.

Never would have thought they would survive low single digit temps

Well you can not blame her for being at least pro active in saving your return pump...
But that is a bit extreme.

I know the feeling. A few months back I got a SMS when I was in Portugal, "RO drum flooded the sump, what now?"
And there is nothing I could do...

I'm not blaming her, my own stupid fault for not setting up an auto top-up system and leaving her instructions on what to do. Live and learn I guess
