Here's a nice little head scratcher

So I'm experiencing some rather random STN on my SPS lately. Tends to start at the tips and work its way down till the colony is gone, but just before it taken the entire colony all of a sudden the next colony starts doing the same thing on the other side of the tank.

Only happening to 1 or 2 colonies at a time. In a tank filled with SPS. So chances of it being parameter driven is highly unlikely as it not affecting all my SPS at once but rather selected ones. I also test my tank parameters rather regularly and have not seen any difference in the numbers I've been accustomed to over the years but Ill give you the numbers any way

Salinity 1.025 (checked and refractometer recalibrated ever time I refill RO drum for ATO)
Temp 24 - 25 degrees (controlled by reef angel heaters & Fans)
Alk 8-9 (checked every 2-3 days)

PO4 0.02 - 0.05 (depending on how fresh the PO4 remover is, I change it out when it gets to 0.05ppm Checked with Hanna PO4 checker weekly)
    Nitrate 0ppm (checked with Hanna)

Calcium 430-440 (using kalk keeps my Ca and Alk rock solid)
    Mg 1450

Dosing Vinegar daily. Did change from Vodca to vinegar about a month ago

Is it a particular colour of SPS that it is happening to Toolboy?
Any other supplements you started dosing lately that could have caused it?
Any new SPS or other corals that may have brought along pests?
Oh, and any changes to lighting?

With such low numbers @Toolboysa have you maybe tried to increase the coral feeding a little in terms of amino acids. Also, is the STN spreading or just on those specific corals? If so, maybe those sps prefer water that contains higher PO4 and NO3?

Nope happens to any colour SPS
Only swapped vodca for vinegar but that was quite awhile back and swapped Fuel for Acropower
Last SPS in went in in Oct 2013
Changed MH bulb about a month ago

Since swapping to Acropower I have actually cause it didnt promote algae growth like Fuel did.

Yip so far. Monti are all fine

Monti are bullet proof. Acro not so much. Yes, remember you telling me about the acropower. How's your flow, is there enough for gaseous exchange under high light conditions? I know you pump your flow, but maybe these are not getting enough?

    Are nutrients extremely low?

I know your nitrate is 0.

Nice thread / brain tickler @Toolboysa.
Unfortunately.... when it gets to coral health, it will always be a guessing game.... We simply do not have the tools to really analyse and diagnose..... However, we have some knowledge, and research to help us figure out an educated guess....

Please post a full tank shot, as I have a few ideas....

Hmmm I would say your Alk is to high I had the same issue. Reduce your alk to between 7 and 8 and you will most certainly see improvement.

I keep my Alk above 10. Corals love it Willie. I agree with @irie ivan, so much we need to learn.

Potasium levels nothing else. Seems like they are a low. This happens in some probiotic systems (like mine) good regular dose of it and problem flies away. I think some bacteria strains use it int heir assimilation of nutrients

So tested tonight. Potassium 430 and iodine somewhere between 0.03 and 0.06

Hay bud for iodine "somewhere" is dangerous IMO. It needs to be very close to 0.06 ppm and rather consistently so.

I know that most test kits give the 0.03 , 0.06 and 0.09 reference. Try maintain I2 at 0.06 and see if there is an improvement.

I agree with NJ would also mention your potasium is a bit high?

I do know that @Broder (mudshark) had a similar issue some years back.

    BTW what happened to mudshark?
