What is the purpose of a Durso?

Is the sole purpose to get rid of the noise the overflow will make?

I've got a durso which runs into a 50mm pipe. I have an in line ball valve, to control the speed at which the durso "sucks" the water from the tank. my durso's pick up is 40mm above my substrate. I also have an overflow at the top - work like a charm.
