Over the last few weeks I have tried every remedy bar copper to rid my ivestock while in dt. The reality Is I have been too arrogant and impatient to quarantine livestock before putting it into my tank. I lasted seven years without an incident and then I got whitespot. Wanting to take the lazy way I threw money at the problem hoping that all the remedies on the shelf would cure the whitespot. In the meantime the fish suffered and some died. And with all the remedies my spses suffered too. Over a period of the last four days. I lost R30 000 of sps. Replacement cost ..... who knows. What have I learned? To cure a problem in your tank rather ensure it doesnt happen by quarintining fish properly and dipping all corals before putting them in your tank. I got a tank from 459b today and finally I am setting up a quarantine tank. I will remove the most of my liverock tonight and catch all fish and put them into copper medicated tank and let my tank and corals recover over the next three months before returning surviving fish to dt. All I can say is that a comment without experience is just that. A comment based on experience is good advice. To the guys who dont quarantine... dont wait for the wakup call. Put the right procedures in place. Thanks Riaanp for advice. Spsmad for all the help and 459b for helping with tank at the drop of a hat.

Sorry about your losses man, it sucks. To be honest, I have also taken chances by adding livestock without QT or adding livestock without QT for long enough. I got a fright this week and saw fish scratch, added Herbtana to be on the safe side, and what a nightmare. Good advice given wrt QT and dipping livestock. It only takes one addition. I will also be sure to dip and QT before I add.

Good luck and I hope you can rid your setup of Whitespot and get your sps back to health.

This is the saddest thing I've seen in a long time. Sorry about your fish and sps @mandarinman, I have been following your new tank with real interest and I will continue to do so.

The majority of people (almost everyone) don't quarantine but it only kicks a few of us in the teeth.

    All the best!

If I read correctly.did you not start losing sps before any signs of sick fish and medication? ... I refer to your tank thread when you made the switch from leds back to T5s .... You said the lights were bleaching your corals, now its the medication??? .... I'm interested as I am new here and took a keen interest in SPS keeping, lots to learn and from what I read its pretty easy to wipe out an entire tank, but for meds? Unless you use copper based,I don't think it can cause the demise of sps colonies ..... Maybe some more experienced keepers can elaborate if I'm incoreect ....

And strongs dude, you will get back very quickly:thumbup:

Well all I can say is I might have paid the cost but it is the livestock which truly paid the price.
