    Good day all!

Something very strange is going on with my pumps....
In the last 2 months three of my pumps just stopped working.
On a closer look I've noted that my propellers are broken (the "fins" is not attached to the magnetic part any more...). The magnetic part is still turning, but the "fins" are standing still, and every now and again it will turn a bit.

All three pumps were bought seperatly.
And the worst of all - the one pump is my ReefOctupus pump for my skimmer.
(I can't recall the other two pumps names - these two pumps are used for water flow only - nothing else.)
I'll be able to give you the spec of the two pumps a bit later...

I've replace a prop for one of the pumps - one week later - it's broken again!!!!

    What can cause this?
    Power spikes/dips?

It sounds like the impellors have snapped. Check the bushes which are the rubber end caps of the impellors for wear and also check the impellor shaft where the magnet goes in for bits of sand or grit and rinse them out

As Tony has said Raven - this mostly happens when there's a lot of muck inbetween the magnet and the sleeve.

Also - I have found that sometimes impellers have "bad batches". This used to happen to me often, at one stage. Now I don't have that issue anymore.

Also ensure that there is no restricted water flow on the inlet of the pumps.....

So - it might be that my cleaning routine of my pumps needs to sharphen up a bit...:)
Some of my pumps are running for 3 years - non stop, and I've only cleaned it once or twice before...:whistling:

These new pumps were running for maybe 6 months - and bang - dead!
I'll make a point of cleaning them more often, and hopes that it will help!

How often do you suggest I must clean it?
Some folks suggested that one can/must use vinegar to clean the pumps - by simply running the pump in a bucket filled with vinegar - will this help alot?

    Thanks guys!

Once a month - to once every 2 months or so Raven.... And yes, white spirits vinegar would work great. BUT, don't use pure vinegar, as it might affect the quality of the plastic/nylon on the pump and impellers..... rather use a 50/50 dilution ratio (or 1 to 1 - if you prefer) ;)

Use vinegar if you have a build up of corraline algae, otherwise some warm soapy water and a good rinse afterwards will do the trick

Ok - I'll have to go and buy new impellers, and stop being lazy, and start to clean all my pumps..
I know what I'm going to do this weekend...:)

You say "non stop" so you havent got them on a timer??

Yip I agree rather 20ltr warm water and 1tr spirit vinigar run pumps and rinse afterwards - works wonders.
