Morning, just a stupid question - can a bag of Purigen replace the work done by a Protein Skimmer in a tank? (95liters)

I use it in my nano without a protein skimmer so I say yes. Their function is different but the end result is the same. Protein skimmer removes crap before it causes ammonia and the rest, whereas purigen consumes any ammonia and the rest. So in actual fact, the purigen removes stuff that got broken down after it got missed by the protein skimmer.

If its a nano, then as long as you dont overstock, and stock selectively, you should be fine. Lots of people run nanos with no skimmers, but other goodies like purigen etc. In a larger tank you cant really replace the skimmer with Purigen.

If you are going to run only purigen(without a skimmer) just remember to replace it regularly as i too run skimmerless on my nano and use purigen. All will go well till its reached the end of its life. Then within 2 days things will go bad very quickly.Cyano outbreaks ect.then you skrik, imediatly replace it and it will take another day or two atleast for everything to return to normal! But this can be avoided if you replace it regularly ie. every 2 months or so and remember the weekly water changes!

    Hope this helps

Dont you mean recharge instead of replace? I recently recharged mine and waiting to see if this works well.

Mine has been running in my little 12G nano for 3 months and it has not even started to change colour. All depends on the fish load of the system.
