Doubt. Been looking for options as well. Even DIY will still cost you about the same as a new unit, but at least then it can by build into the hood.

is possible but need to make sure the controller can handle the unit, hence building it from scratch youl be spot on.

Don't agree with this so much. eBay is extremely cheap in comparison with units being sold in the shops. If you don't mind not using parts that are ''the best of the best" you can do it for a portion of the price of a manufactured unit. I bought all my LEDs (not cree or anything) from ebay and my corals are doing well under them, SPS included. I am getting a lot more colour out of them that I was with my MH and T5 unit. With the huge price drop in using DIY you can afford more LEDs (i'm talking wattage here) and get your PAR up to decent levels. The 3W whites I am using put out 220 LM. My LED unit in total puts out over 10000 LM and I can dim my LED drivers all the way down to 1 out of 255. That's less than a percent of the total output. I've built 3 units and it hasn't even cost me 3k. The heatsink was the hardest to source, which I got from China, but it's all very do-able with some DIY know how.

My last arduino mega cost me R180 and it can do anything these others can. For a TL550 I don't see why your total cost of a unit should be well below R1000. So think about it;)

I went with a local guy. I got my blue and cool white led chips, resistors, heatsinks, driver and 2x dimmers. All that for R800. I obviously fitted it all myself to my lid while keeping my standard tl550 tubes running. (Best of both worlds)
The best part is I only added 4 of each chips at 10w each. Cool whites are 14000k and blues are 450nm.
So in total I have the standard 48w of tubes and another 80w of dimmable led power

You can build a led Unit for 1000 Zar for about 99watts of power that includes everything!
