    Hey everyone,

So this weekend i got myself a pom pom crab. When i put it into the tank i noticed a red thing on its underside. I immediately thought it was eggs so never looked again. This morning when it came out to feed it took a closer look. ITS A BRISTLE WORM!!!!

The strange thing is the crab is holding it with one leg!! it also still has its two anenome!!!

Maybe it's the crustacean equivalent of a teddy bear.

Very odd though. One thought that went through my mind are those parasites that subvert the host organism's nervous system, which makes the host take care of the parasite's eggs and brood.

Mistaken identity as pom pom's use obnoxious objects for protection. I guess a bristle worm will do a great job, even towards humans! A pic would be great.:)

    extremly unlikley. (imesho) :)

id personally take a bristle worm on a pom pom crab as a very worrying sign. I highly doubt that bthe pom pom is trying to hold the crab in place and is almost certainly under attack rather than having it there vollintary.

bristle worms are known to attach or attack animals in distress, and i have a feeling that the pom pom is not totally aclimatized and strong, especially having just been in the tank a few days.

do you have any idea on the Iodine levels of the tank? its important for inverts to molt propperly.

watch the little pom pom well and carefully (plus try feed him some defrosted krill or mussel) and see how he is doing over the next fe days.

Ok guys still trying to get a pic. I did a bit of research and found that if they lose an anenome they can use other objects. One pic on the net is also a bristle worm being held in the one pincer and anenome in the other!!!! amazing!!!

i'll still state a fair wack of money (if i were a betting man) that its one eating the other and NOT a symbiotic relationship. either that bristleworm has senced that the pom pom is new and in a weakened state, or that pom pom is making a meal out the bristle worm (whioch they are known to do.) Id love a pic but im fairly sure its eat or be eaten in this state.

i should add that pom poms will use other objects on their claws if they loose their anenome's, and i have heard of one using part of a bristle worm to do this, but that is only AFTER its lost its symbiotic nennies and not before. Mushrooms, aptasia etc etc can all be picked up but thats after they have lost their nennies.

as you say yours has both nennies, im still going with eat or be eaten:)

Just a question: what is your SG because bristle worms tend to venture out and look for food when SG is a bit high othewise they tend to hide.

Jip that is fine. Is the bristle worm still stuck to the crab?

Ok peeps! un update on this thread!! both pom pom are still alive. However i do believe they eat bristle worms for sure!!! the other day i saw my pom pom munching another small bristle worm and this morning i found my big pom pom which must be nearly the size of a R5 coin holding a huge bristle worm!!!!

Never thought the pom pom crabs would eat the worms. Strange but interesting. Thanks for the update.
