No I haven't tried it without except in a bucket. Don't want ALL my substrate blown away... I tried it in a bucket to test the claim of the auto cut off if there's no water, it works :) The pump stops and the controller displays "00" until you reset it.

Thanks for taking the time to inform us about the powerheads. It would probably do the job of my two Vortechs but at a fraction of the cost.

Keep the vortech for the sides or from the back towards front and add a polario ;)

Jeepers, I'll have my corals hanging on for dear life. 48000LPH or 70 times internal flow of my tank. SOme serious combined flow there.

Now that was a pleasure to read. Unbiased and very informative.

Great review! Well put Rory! However that 'whine' can actually be heard from quite a distance even though mines is connected inside of the tank. Nothing too serious though.

Is the whine you hear coming from the pump or the controller fan?

    From the actual pump Rory.
Anyone else with a similar experience? I think it was Fransny who had the same issue.

Ok. Maybe I didn't run mine enough or something. Have you tried fiddling with the magnets and stuff? I ran mine for a full day on the lowest setting and then just a bit of testing here and there. Can't say there's any noticeable whine from the pump...

Yip I did play with the magnets etc...But you can hear the actual noise coming from the motor inside. I havent tried the low settings, I got mines on high, I'll drop it and see how it goes.....
