This coral is opening up or so much more in the last 2 weeks than it ever did in the last year. Can you help to ID and then also assist me in what might be making it so happy. My tank is the same as before with the only difference being a filter with PhosGuard added about 2 weeks ago.

Maybe its the misspelling on the packaging that makes the sponge work so well to make the coral happy ... maybe it is working and reducing the phos so the coral is happy...

Right thread was trying to answer a 2 in 1 thread ... sorry first part of herkies question couldn't help with ID ... With ref to his other thread and this one maybe the reduction of PO4 (which he thought was not happening) could be assisting it the coral being "happy"

The 2 similar threads posted at almost the same time was bound to cause confusion. I used the filter for about 2 months and it did not seem to have any effect. I then recently started the PhosGuard and this coral started blooming.

Herkie - I think that the 2nd coral is called "acanastrea" (sp?) or "acan" for short.

Hi SIMS - I have investigated this once, due to owning one. The polyps on the hydnophora is to big, to be classified SPS (small polyped stony). I also once thought that the hydnophora was SPS.

I wish I could capture the true colour of this coral, it is truly beautiful. Especially in the blue light.
