I got the Sal;ifert test kit(exp 11/2010) to verify my cheap kit which always gives me a reading of 8.3. But this colour doesn't even seem to be in the same ball-park?????

Have you done the test a couple of times and do you keep getting the same result? I've never used the salifert PH kit but I would guess that something is wrong with one of the reagents.

Mudshark, it looks like your Ph is below 7.4, or the kit is faulty.

Yeah Viper. Have done it a couple of times. I'm hoping that someone who has the Salifert kit can help out and tell us if this is a normal colour. I get more or less the same colour from 3 different tanks, so I'm assuming it must be around 8.3.

Wow... now I'm worried. How would I raise my ph if that is the case?

You could use a buffer to slowly raise it over a period

I dont think you should worry Broder. Im am 100% sure that test kit is faulty. Anyone in the area with a Ph pen or monitor?

I had the same problem - LFS exchanged the kit for me for a sera one and I had no worries and the kit was allot better. I have heard people on here mention that they don't like the sera test kits but I had no problems. Have since bought a PH test pen and the reading is exactly the same as my sera test kit!

PS. But if you do really have a PH problem I know kent has a cool buffer that works well. Friend of min uses it and it increased his PH to the right level over 3 weeks, and now maintains it perfectly. Think he now only dosis once a week to maintain the buffer capacity

have you tried testing NSW? and perhaps another persons tank with a known ph value? i have used salfert test kits before but never the ph one, they have worked well for me in the past.. this one looks like a dud.

I'll measure NSW this evening. I hope it's a dud, otherwise I'm in trouble.

There is no ways your PH can be that low, i am betting a faulty test kit.

Not very vigorously, but I'll try again with some serious shaking.

Mudshark - something must have contaminated the vial you are using.....
How many times have your tried the measurement?

Please retry this? And then take a sample of your water to a fellow reefkeeper to test too, please?

I've tried the test on 3 tanks and last night I got the same results with NSW, so I'm gonna buy a PH pen instead. Thanks for the help guys. It seems that it must have been a dud kit as nobody else seems to have the same problem.
