I have heard that guys are using play pen sand for kids Sand Pits in their Reef tanks. Is that a good idea?

Nothing wrong with it. Wash it until it becomes clean and white, and then use it. :)

thanks guys! that should save me about R800.

    appreciate it.

I'm busy setting up a reef tank and getting my ducks in a row.
Does anyone have some advise to save a buck such as the sand that I should be aware of?

    Welcome Saltyreef !

Nothing wrong with the advice regarding playsand the guys gave you ....just a word of caution watch out for "Playpen Sand" ..normally sold by nurseries as it is quite coarse sometimes, rather go to reggies and get their bagged Playsand...nice and fine

I take it that you meant Reggies sand...just wanted to make sure, HAPPY POSTING :)

    I'm converting my freshwater tank.

Its a 400l odd Diamond shaped corner tank in a wooden cabinet.

I have a large cannister filter with ceramic rings, bio balls, carbon and a bio sponge in it.

I have a small protein skimmer that runs on its own pump and air supply.

    I have a 300w Jebo Heater.

and now i will have some reggies play sand.

I still need to drill the tank and put in a sump and overflow surface skimmer.

I planned on putting the skimmer in the sump and adding 2 baffles with a deep sand bed.

What i would like to acheive is a Reef tank with invertabrates and as a secondary thought some fish.

But essentially I like the reef and invertabrates more!

Thats the right sand. Just wash it well it should be nice and white. Not the same white you get from aragonite but good enough!
