Sooooo.... As everyone knows, once you've started you always want to go bigger. The fiance has finally agreed (ok it was a bargaining deal, she gets an upgraded kitchen!) So now it is time to start planning the build.

I have a lot of questions so i hope you guys can help me out.

My current tank is rimless and i just love the effect so wanna go this way again.

Planned size for the tank is 1600L 1000W 600H with the water level at 550, viewable from 3 sides.

Now for my first question, I obviously would love to go rimless and use starphire glass, what mm glass would be sufficient without any bracing?

    Thanks

Hi Andrew Not sure the strength of Starfire to normal glass comparrison, but a tank 1M wide and water height of 550, without bracing you might get away with 12mm glass but wavepumps etc causing added pressure I would go for 15mm...
Gonna cost a bundle this thick in starfire:whistling:

    Rimless, 19mm

Just note that rimless tanks snails climb out easier and carpet surfing is more of an issue. At end of the day, your choice.

    Thanks RiaanP
My current system is rimless and have never had an issue. So 19mm, wow a bit thicker than i thought, but starphire is def the way to go!

Now, would you be able to use a mic of normal and starphire on the tank ie, just have the viewable panes starphire instead of wasting a massive slab as your base?

Depending who builds the tank..maybe go 2x10mm=20mm laminated starfire glass...
    Then you can go rimless

the glass thickness is based on height
1600x1000x600 with water at 550 12mm will give you a safety of 4.7 no bracing

my new tank is 2500x1000x600 in 12mm with bracing due to length

vatso tank is 2000x1000x700 12mm full brace

Fantastic, thanks for the info guys. @dallasg, Is a safety rating of 4.7 acceptable? And would this be the same for starphire?

3.8 is the base, as for strength of starphire/crystal glass I will find out
