Hi all, this is for the guys that work with RAW files and Photoshop.

I have Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop Elements 7 and I am wanting to work with RAW files from my camera in Elements.

My first question, is it best to work with the RAW file straight from the camera or should I use the Adobe DNG converter to convert the RAW file to a DNG file? Any pro's or cons either way?

    Thanks.

Dean not sure about CS3. On the Photography course i went on run by Cormac McCreesh he recommends Light Room. He taught us the shoot all pic's in RAW and import to a storage device as RAW. Then to import the files into Light room as RAW. when one works on the file in Light Room it saves them as DNG files. This way you always have a copy of the original pic.

I am still green on this subject and only parting with what i was taught.

I use lightroom for weeding out my photos since you can compare 2 photos along side each other etc. Once I have found a photo that I would like to edit I open it in photoshop. I process directly from raw. Photoshop makes its own file as well so the raw always stays untouched.

    Nowhere :whistling:

But Orms in Cape Town would be one of the least expensive...

    Lightroom: R3295.00

    Photoshop CS5: R7995

At the price of CS5 and Lightroom, stick to Photoshop Elements. It will also get you started without blowing your mind.

as to how to use the RAW files, get them onto your machine (which ever way you normally do) then open them in Adobe and it will open the RAW Editor. Make your changes as required - do not let RAW sharpen you image, do that in Photoshop.

Then either save your new file as a PSD and not DNG or open directly in Photoshop Elements and save from there.

Elements will keep you going for a very long time.

Yeah I suppose it is simple and I should have qualified that that comment was aimed at CS5 vs. Elements.

But elements is about 1/4 the price........

I might also be wrong, but beyond the scope of photography, Lightroom will not be able to do what PS can do..... but it also depends what you want to do...

Guys i was told that for photo processing and organization use Light room. If you want to put sunglasses on nemo or have a goby coming out of a banana skin then go with CS5.
