Im really not a LED fan, but this unit may sway my opinion: http://www.philips.co.uk/c-m-li/coralcare

Main thing i like about it is that they directly compare it to an aquarium standard, namely T5's. Instead of making outrageous claims, they have put it through a lot of testing and have published the results. Then theres the simplicity; no storm mode, unlimited channels, infinite different colours of chips etc etc.

Possibly the main reason im interested is because its made by an international company thats already established in South Africa. Will this mean it wont get the usual over the top aquarium product import dollar price excuse added? What will this mean for customers service, repairs, spare etc? Philips' other products are excellent and the warranties offered are good and honoured. Dont see why a light unit would be any diferent.

    Thought?

My opinion - That is the way Leds should be mounted.

Else you get the spotlight effect. For example car headlights against the garage door. In between you do not have intense light. Need to move LED units closer to each other so that they do overlap each other. Most Leds have lenses on them, focusing the light direction in a narrow beam. Unlike T5 that is all over the reflectors and hitting the corals from all sides. Might even explain RTN against SPS colonies stems, as the coral will shade itself with only one focused light source above it.

This CoralCare units from Philips do not use a Led cluster like Radion. Leds are spread out over the face of the unit. Passively cooled where Radion uses fans that can and do fail. Uses 190W same as Radion Gen3 Pro if not mistaken.

Scrap that, in the reefers test report, he only used 4 on a 3 x 1 x 0.8m tank

They were just released in Europe.
Would be great if Philips SA would bring them in.

Quite expensive at 700 odd Euros for one unit.

They first going to launch in Europe (like they did)

Then they heading to the states after they comply with their electronic certification etc.

Doubt we will see it before 2018

an interesting approach was adopted in the manufacturing of these lights.

Their head engineer is on Rc where people can ask him anything about the light.

Will see if I can find the thread

seems to be the biggest Led unit out there in terms of wattage unit that is passively cooled.
No fans that can pack up.
