What are you using to test the pH.

    Hi Leslie

I am not sure what is causing this ,only thing maybe my test kit is not working because it constantly remains at 8.6

take a sample of tankwater to your LFS and ask them to check the PH

Then you will know if its your test kit that is faulty or not.

Dont do anything until you are sure of the correct pH. Get it re tested by another reference first.

Just have a wait before you add anything or dabble with water chemistry. 8.6 is on the high side but not dangerous.

As @nemosjanitor said, you would need a very reliable method of pH test to distinguish between say 8.4 and 8.6.

Biotic activity and several other factors will work to slowly bring the pH down unless you are using "kalk".....

Bud it is great that you went out and bought a pH pen. however not so great that you did not get the calibration fluids with it.

Most, not all, pH pens require a two point calibration reference. For marine tanks you require a pH 7 and pH 10 reference solution. For fresh water you would require a pH 4 and pH 7 reference solution for calibration.

you should have gotten calibration instructions and calibration references with your purchase.

pH reference solutions can be bought from Hanna, else you could get the relevant profilux solution from your LFS.
