    Hi All,

Was trolling through the internet and started looking at overflow and return systems and then stumbled across this little Utube video for something called a X-inout overflow and return system. This looks like a very neat solution and from what I can see would take up very little "real-estate" in the tank. Obviously make huge sense for a Nano tank but was wondering if anyone had experience with these things (or similar - please advise) on larger tanks. Also, LOVE the waves and ripples that the return makes, but again, wonder if this would work on larger tanks.

Check out this video (funny production value too)

Yep, that's where I first saw this type of overflow ... started looking into it and reading reviews and then stumbled across this one ...

... only thing is that Brett is also building a Nano ... was wondering how these things would live up to on a 200-400 liter setup

Looking into these things and as a Newb (with no tank yet) I also began to think ... "how do you control the balance between overflow and return" so that you don't overfill your tank or run it dry ... is this a trial and error exercise. Throttle your pump until desired results are achieved ?

I first stumbled across the x-in/out and really liked it! Only down side was that you can't turn off the pulsing of the return and the overflow is a bit noisy. Then with a bit more research I found the Oceanlife overflow which was perfect for me.

To answer you question about the flow. Running my waveline DC3000 return pump at 50% is the "safe" limit. So they don't handle a lot but on larger tanks Iv seen guys use 2. Both overflows have similar flow ratings.

Cool, thanks for the feedback. After browsing many options I am starting to think that my favorite system would actually be a tank-length overflow with 2 outlets to the sump. Think this will skim things nicely. Would just have to play with flow rates.

I love the simplicity of the overflow and the small footprint.

Do you find this overflow to do sufficient surface skimming? And is it very noisy?

Lastly where in SA did you find it or did you have to import it?
