    HI all

I finally got a tank lined up, will collect in August, I forgot that its my birthday coming up and my wife asked what I wanted so I told her! :whistling: but I have been reading so much about pumps, protein skimmers, salt, kalkwassers, lights, water flow, I have become a bit worried about what all is really needed! Please can someone direct me on a thread or some of your geniuses on marine aquariums tell me, once I get my tank, what will be next? Do I just add salt water and let it run for a month or what?

    Thank you

Once your hardware is sorted and ready ... add substrate, water, salt and live rock ... then let it cycle for about a month ...

BGK, have a look here: Beginner Discussions - Marine Aquariums of South Africa

or you can have a look at some of the Build threads in the Memebers Systems & Setup section. Some great stories and info there. Most of us share every last detail planning, the build, the cycle and maintenance. Have a look at some threads on tanks the same size as the one you intend to get.

    Happy reading.

Welcome to this wonderful hobby. I wish you all the best of luck and enjoyment.
You will need to start your tank cycle now... how many liters is the tank going to be? is 20kg of salt going to be enough to get it to the right salinity and let it cycle?

I would suggest planning and thinking, then thinking some more.. and one more time before starting anything. Make sure you have all you need to get going and then go for it and enjoy it.

Depends on the salt. Red sea coral pro salt is 35grams to a liter so you would need 22.75Kg to fill 650l

blackghostknife, keep in mind that your live rock will drop your water quantity. So it all depends on how much LR you will be putting in.

Just let the tank run for a day with only salt water the put the rock in

When you have inserted the live rock then your cycle starts
Normally it is for every 10L you must put 1kg of live rock

The second thing no one mentions is that cycling also let's you kill white spot eggs and other paricites that need hosts to live

And as a fish suggestion for you have a look at the white cap goby

That is only rule of thumb
So it is up to you how much you put in
Also have a look at base rock it is cheaper but still must be seeded with sum live rock in your tank
