Started my tank about 2 months ago and already thinking of going bigger:biggrin: :whistling:, due to n tight budget my options are limited.

New tank dimentions 650l x 500d x 500h. have softies (pulsing xinia, pipe organ, mushroom, leather finger, pin cushion)

the lighting I am looking for is either the
    Beamworks led
    BeamsWork LED 1600 - 60cm (1W x 27pcs) - R1,921.00 : Jungle Aquatics, Petshop Superstore and Retail Outlet
    and
    Odyssea T5 Quad 60cm 4x 24W
Odyssea T5 Quad 60cm 4x 24W Light Unit - R1,449.00 : Jungle Aquatics, Petshop Superstore and Retail Outlet

What I know is that you have to replace the tubes about every 6 months on the t5

Now where your opinions come in, witch will be best, and is the Beamworks led safe to be used with corals(softies mostly)

Led is the long run works out cheaper for sure , mine paid for them selves in the first 10 months, the unit you looking at is only 27w thats not much i would look for something stronger , i run a 150w led unit on the same size tank ,keeping in mind i keep sps and softies mixed ,have a look at my tank thread

Thanks.. I would love to get a proper led unit but unfortunately they have a proper price tag.:y13: Will upgrade to the bigger better ones later on, after the expences of buildnig and upgrading to my new tank has calmed down a bit.

so between these 2 options you would say rather the t5?

T5, from the for sale section.
even if you have to replace the globes now.

6 months later, when the next replacement comes up, then take a re-look at the LED option. Your requirements will change. You are only 2 months into this hobby. Your preference might change to LPS or SPS or mixed reef.

If you can find a secondhand T5 at a price affordable to you, rather save up, do plenty of research on what your requirements are (eg. dimmable, how many channels, colors, cooling etc.) Then save up to whatever your final choice of light, be it LED or others...

The variety is endless out there, no need to rush into things. Try to go and look at members systems. Or visit some LFS's. Most ave a variety of lights on their display systems, and some are very helpful in displaying a light on a system if you ask them nicely ;) (Brian took an hour running around to find connectors, just to get 1 light up, but I finally ended up taking it, because I was impressed with it :)

So look around, Look at threads and current systems. I am sure if you ask, many on MASA will open their homes to let you see their units in action ...

if you buy good quality T5 tubes, ATI or Geisseman they can last up to 18 months, depending on cycle etc.
every lamp has duty hours that it can work for...
so saying you have to replace every 6months is a misnomer
