just checked a story on Natgeo this morning (couldnt sleep...and didnt feel like zapping my aptasia farm:)) about bee decline in the US and other parts of the world due to a "aids type" immune probelm.

found it a bit inconclusive in theend...Crispin haveyou done any research etc on this?

Fransy i have done lots of reading on CCD (collony collapse disorder). Its the largest threat to our world food supply!

Its all very inconclusive as you say, simply because the total reasoning behind the disapearing of the bees on mass (and thus the "disapearing") is 8unheard of. Well no, its happened before, but not on this sort of scale.

the reasons behind are complex and intertwined it would appear, but the primary ones arë:
Over use of pesticides in convensional farming (specifically fruit where the bees are used to pollinate)
Genetic constriction (too few bees used originally to breed, thus the gene pool is simply too small, specifically with the way the USA has selectivley bred bees for specific traits)
Over working of bees (transporting them across the states many miles for short periods and not allowing the bees to recover, specifically on mono crops where the work periods are short...three weeks or so)
Chemical controll of dread diseases inside a collony.
GMO crops causing problems in the pollen which is a major food source for bees.

Thats in no order of priority. There are other more fanciful theories such a cell phone towers distrupting navigation paths etc etc, but the above are the theories with the most realistic possibilities. I would think that its a combination, with GMO, chemical farming and overworking of bees on monocrops as being the primary intertwined reasons to such a massive loss to our bee stocks.

Its serious....very, and we actually have little understanding of what we are doing thats causing it. Of undouted theory is that the problems BEES face are man made :(

if you want a better more thought provocking study on the topic "a world without bees" is a great read, and pretty up to date.

does that help at all ?

what would we do without pollonation...no fruit, no flowers etc etc...they were saying that +/- 1/3 of all land living animals have a pollonating effect...scary if u ask me
