    Hi peeps

can we get a collection going of marine stuff we going to throw out & then bring that stuff to the reef meetings once a month & or when people on the site needs some help "free stuff" we can give it to them?

Maybe a sponsor could keep this stuff or a reefer? like the JHB MASA chairman?

    what you think peeps?

I think it is a great idea. I'm sure most of us have odds and sods lying around, that someone could use, if only temporarily.

That does become a valid point, I think it could be based on one of the "more senior" members reviewing someones tank and or setup and making a judgement call. The items in the "free stuff" collection could be for a limited few to know.

I am sure that between so many of us, we could have a large quantity of equipment which could help many reefers who either can't afford certain equipment or can improve by means of a "swap out" to better equipment.

As Chika mentioned, it could become a platform otherwise for some people to simply cash in on free stuff. So this needs to be controlled.

The alternative is to have it potentially on sale within members at a reduced price for those with actual financial constraints, not to make them feel like they are just getting hand out's but still paying their way, if we have extra things we have the choice to donate things to this "pool" and the proceeds could bring together the funds for a Christmas get together for the club...We will all benifit from that method. We can get together at a nominated destination agreed to by all, potentially put a random reef type of gift for the club members - something random...

Or we could have a collection of items at a designated location and should anyone require an item they can get in touch with whoever has the items and simply collect. You can maybe make like a swap shop of sorts...

There are many ideas which come to mind as to how this can be controlled.

I do however think that it is a good idea, I know I have a few items which can go to the collection...Or swap them out for something more constructive. One man's junk is another man's treasure sort of thing.

Maybe what might be a better idea is for someone in the different area's to build a "kitty" where unwanted but "useable" stuff is kept and the members from those area's have access to the equipment in an emergency can "loan" from the kitty untill they on their feet again .... again within reasonable time limits and they must make some effort to get on their feet! Then when finished with equipment return it (in working order or at least in the condition you borrowed it) for others to benefit if they in trouble..... If possible can also be inter-provincial as long the one in trouble pays the freight and promises to return the equipment or risk never being "helped" again when in trouble....

That "kitty" could be helpfull on a late Saturday afternoon or Sunday or if spares are a week away but can't afford the equipment to be out of action...

Many ideas are coming forward and I personally am keen on the conceptual idea of collecting a "kitty" of equipment.

We could also just take our spares to the reefers meetings and if someone has the requirement for it, then they get it, otherwise the reefer takes it back home to return next month with it.

Just picture the storage space required if we all pitched a few items in, more so for the reefers who have been in it for a number of years who have collected many "spares"...So as appealing as it is to have a central storage place, not too many people have large volumes of spare space available for this cause.

Maybe it should be something on the topic of discussion at the next reefers meeting because it is really those who attend the meetings who would be the fair benificiaries.

to make things fair we can start a registry of who took what, that way we can see who the takers and non givers are
