    Hi
I have a rather odd question.
I am receiving my additional sump today, but still waiting for my new setup.
I plan to use the additional sump for mostly chem and bio filtration- to clear some space in the main sump.
I was wondering whether it would be worth it to fill my sump with the bio media, saltwater, heater and pump to circulate and start cycling the sump on its own. Perhaps also ghost feeding one pellet per day into the sump just to get the bacteria started?

Or should i just wait and start all together.

Im using south seas base rock. Its not live, plus the spaces in the sump are to small for the rock.
Lots of narrow chambers to force the flow through the media.

Cycle the rock in the display with flow pumps and a heater.

What bio media are you going to use?

Marine pure spheres and Seachem Matrix.
Dot have the aquarium yet which is why im considering starting cycling on just the sump.

I was advised by experienced members on the group to do the same. Whilst waiting for my system to be set up I cycled 5kg of liverock with beach sand in a large plastic bucket with about 200L of bought saltwater. Added a small pump to move water around and an airstone to oxygenate. Fed small amounts brine shrimp and a few pellets every 3-4 days. When setup was complete I moved the water and rock to the sump and only connected the DT to sump once scape was in place and DT water level was high enough to reach the overflow. Happy with the results so far...

i cant really see a problem with starting the sump on its own, in the absence of lighting you will actually probably gain more ground in that parameters will settle without having teh chemistry catalysed into algal growth etc. there will be a small advantage to getting it started earlier.
