    Hi everyone,

Another newbie here who needs help from the pros ;-)

I've started a new 400 litre tank with a 125 litre sump, the tank has been cycled and has a sand sifting starfish, sand dollar and 2 blue legged hermits. As for hitchhikers, I have an Asterina starfish, a tiny hermit crab who as far as I can tell is black, no idea what species it might be, another unknown starfish that's about 1.5 cm and a few sea sponges.

On to the question, I've noticed that I have to top up about 4-5 litres of fresh rodi water per day, is this considered normal?

    Thanks for the help!

That sounds normal. My tank is roughly the same size as yours and I average between 2 and 4 liters per day.

You should maybe get rid of the sand sifting starfish. There won't be enough food for it in a new tank to survive, they need very mature sand beds with lots of pods/detritus.

A rough estimate would be 10% RO top up per week.
Things like canopy, type of lights, fans, scrubbers and even the room does impact evaporation rates. Your rate is slightly lower.

Sand sifting starfish and sand dollar will not make it in a new tank. Sorry.

Thanks guys, thankfully that's ok. My sump is closed so that might be the cause of the slightly lower evap rates.

That's too bad, about the sand dollar and starfish, lfs advice ftw again. Are there any foods that I can hand feed them?

My tank needs about 5L a day, it's a 600L tank with no canopy and a closed sump but I do generate a lot of surface agitation so that increases evaporation.

For the sand sifting star, I had a few in my old tank. They move fast and eat a lot... they do also eat what's left on the ground so some food flakes might tide it over for a bit but it will be difficult. They are GREAT though and man can they grow big!

Thanks @SAReefer! Yeah I decided to hold onto the sand sifting sea star, it's doing extremely well. The more fish I add the bigger it gets. He's like a rocket the moment I turn the lights off :D
